22 - Correct Method To Interview
After resigning from the mill, Bhai was going back. On the way he noticed a long queue in front of a school. He stopped there and inquired. He found out that the interviews for the post of a teacher were going on. Bhai also joined the queue. He went inside when it was his turn. Inside there were some apparatus used in experiments arranged by the interviewers. They asked Bhai to show them how to use those apparatus. Bhai went to the apparatus. He observed them closely. Bhai replied, ‘These apparatus are arranged in improper manner. Some parts of them are missing. Some of them are faulty.' The persons who were conducting interview were glad to hear his response. They informed Bhai, ‘We wanted to find out if you can make out whether the apparatus are arranged properly.' Bhai was surprised. Looking at Bhai’s expressions, one of the interviewers asked, ‘Would you like to say something?' Bhai replied, ‘Yes. What did you find out about my knowledge of the subject by testing me in this manner?' The interviewer said, ‘We found out that you know how to use the apparatus.' Bhai explained, ‘I am a graduate of the subject. I must be having the knowledge about how to use the apparatus. But how did you assess my knowledge of the subject?' Everyone present there looked at each other. Bhai continued, ‘You must ask me to perform some experiment using the apparatus. You must ask me to demonstrate the experiments of chemical reactions etc.. You must ask me a few questions related to my subject. Then only you could find out my mental capabilities. If I declare faulty instruments as faulty, how does it qualify me as a knowledgeable person? You must try to assess, if I get this job, how would I teach the students. This is the correct method to interview.' By expressing his views, Bhai might not have got the job. But he did not think about it and expressed his views frankly and openly.
The interviewers were spellbound. They told, ‘You are right. That is the correct way to interview. You have spoken with self confidence. It indicates that you have sufficient knowledge of the subject. We appoint you for the job. You are the most deserving candidate for this job. No one could be better than you. You have pointed out our mistake and taught us the correct way to interview.'
